Seaurchin~Onward Toward The Goal « Thread Started on Dec 17, 2005, 10:52pm »
The captain of the Seaurchin had returned to her cabin as the sky began to change from blue to pink, the great orb that was the sun sinking down into the hazy horizon, its edges shimmering and wavering like the waves upon the sea. The wind had lessed in strength over the past hours, though it still blew enough to push the vessel along at a steady, if somewhat slower pace than previously in the day. The large swells, steady as the breeze was, rocked the ship as it cruised along; not in a way that was unpleasant, but something more like the rocking of a baby's cradle, a mother's gentle hand pushing softly.
Sitting down in the chair behind her desk, she lit the candle that she always kept there in case she had need to burn the midnight oil, and that night she did indeed. There was so much to think about, so much to do in order to be ready in time. Placing her elbows on the top of her desk, she rested her head in her cupped hands and sighed. It was not an exasperated sigh, or even agitated in any way. It was simply and purely tired. She just couldn't stand it any longer. How long could she search for the man who had murdered her parents–along with half the village population–if he kept staying one step, one place, ahead of her? How could she find him and get the revenge that had led her on for so long, if she had only the vague, painfilled memory of that fateful day to go on?
"Why am I doing this?" she said aloud, shaking her head as she held it. "Why did I not leave when I had the chance, when I could have changed my life?" Why did I choose this life? this life, over any other that I could have chosen? Why?

Harry pushed his hair out of his face and sighed. He looked up into the sky, where stars were beginning to show the last signs of color were sinking down below the horizon, the pinks, purples and yellows that showed of the disappearing sun. He thought about what Dinje had said about him not really being a pirate. He knew that no one on board were his real parents. He wondered where they were. But the first memories that he had were him on the boat. The young boy could remember nothing else. He grit his teeth and stared off into the distance. 'Did I really have a choice to become a pirate?' a little voice asked him in his head. 'Did I?' 'Yes,' another voice replied. 'I've always wanted to be one.' 'But did I have a chance to see other lives, another way of living?' said the other voice. 'Yes!' argued the voice, desperate. 'When you were young, since you probably didn't come from this ship!' 'But I don't remember it, so it doesn't really count....'

Abruptly setting down the papers that she had taken to going over, Rene stood and made her way over the wide window that arced across the back of her cabin. Plancing her small hands upon the thin sill, she looked out, staring out into the distance with unseeing eyes. She could feel the long held back tears burning behind her eyes, ones that had waited far to long in silence, ones that should have spilled over at that very moment. But they did not. They merely burned, reminding her that it was not yet time for tears to be shed, even ones that had been held back for so many painful years.
No one, not her crew, not her friends–if she could even call them that–not anyone would understand. Understand how it felt to watch your parents be murdered before your very eyes, and to see the sick smile of the one who committed the deed. To feel the aching throb of vengeance pound away in one's gut every waking moment, those final seconds repeating in one's mind, over and over. She slammed one hand down on the sill, not having realized that she had raised it in the first place, her eyes still burning. She just wanted it to be over. She didn't know if she'd remain a pirate once she'd gotten her revenge, but she wasn't sure if there were any other reasonable routes to take. She was a wanted figure, and who would want to hire someone who had commited such attrocities as she had. No one would. She smiled wryly to herself. It was either do her work of revenge and continue being a pirate, or do that work and die trying.

OOC: Okay, sorry I'm not going to post now. I'll let someone else do that first. But I just wanted to point out that Rene feels that way about her parents, and none of her "friends", or crew, would understand, but Jayune would understand completely. Ironically, it was Rene and her crew who murdered his parents. Huh...

((And Jonathan would understand. He had to hide while his parents were taken captive and was powerless to change anything!))
Mark strode down the deck, reveling in the wind in his hair and the sun on his face, glad that the cursed storm was finally over. This was the life for him. He saw Rene standing at her window and gave her a brief salute, telling by her expression that she would not thank him for speaking with her right now. Then he walked on down, whistling merrily, as he looked over at Wavefang. It was good to have allies, for once. "Have you seen anything interesting, Harry?" he called up to the crow's nest to the boy, though he highly doubted anyone would be around at this time of year, nearly winter.

"Naw, nothing yet," Harry yelled down the the first mate. (He is the first mate right?) Nothing except for that other ship. I've been having a competition to see who will spot the first ship or something on the water. I think I'm winning!" he cried, glad to have something to do up there. "I saw a seagull before he did!" the boy laughed and leaned on the edge of the crow's nest. "Anything interesting going on down there?" he asked.

"Nothing much. The waves are calm and the wind is just right. Glad to see your having a good time, though!" Mark laughed. "I'll see you around, Harry!" He waved at the boy and presumed his inspection, wishing something interesting would happen. No, he definitely didn't want another storm, but it sure was boring around here when there was no one to fight, and nowhere to explore, since he knew every inch of the ship already, from bow to stern.

Closing her eyes for a moment, she took a deep breath, a calming breath, and held it for another moment before letting it all out at once. Shoulders sagging, she opened her eyes and again looked out the window at the receeding horizon line, the fast disappearing sun staining the remnant clouds purple and red and the odd splash of gold. A painting in the evening sky.
Straitening up, she returned to her desk and shuffled up some papers into a semi-neat pile before stuffing them into a drawer, locking it with the same key that locked her cabin door, and exited the room. There was no time to reminisce about what might have been, absolutely no time. And her cabin had been getting a mite stuffy, anyhow.

((yes, sorry))
Mark hailed his captain when she saw her come out of her cabin. "Any news, Cap'n? Harry says there ain't no ships other than Wavefang near us, so that's good. Have you figured anything else out about this whole..." he stopped himself just in time before he blurted out the secret. Knowing that Rene knew what he was talking about, he stopped in front of her and looked down at her inquringly.

"None yet, I'm afraid," she said curtly, dragging her eyes away from the magnificent ocean sunset. One could just barely see their fellow pirate ship on the horizon, heading south as they were. It certainly made the voyage a little less lonely, but sometimes it was pleasant to just be a ship and the open waters of the Sintatic with naught but the odd cay in sight.
Chuckling softly as her first mate cut off his words before letting any...less than known information slip out she answered, "No to that query as well, Mark. I'm assuming that Talina and I will talk the plan over once more before we actually make port and set this thing in motion, but other than that, there's no new news that goes along with that particular topic. But Mark," she beckoned him closer and continued in a softer tone of voice, "I need you to keep this quiet for a little longer. The crew doesn't need to know this yet. And I will not have a mob of blood thirsty savages chomping at the bit. Talina and I agreed to make this as blood-free as is physically possible, and well, you know my crew as well as I do, and how they can be...a little over excitable when it comes to raids."

"Of course, Cap'n," Mark said, saluting. "I won't tell a thing until you say I can. Anything that needs to be done, though? Seems as if we've got a straight course to the place, and there ain't nothing for a bored first mate to do here, if you understand my situation." He was bored as heck. The men were so well behaved, and the orders of Rene were so routine that there was no reason to go on watching them, and so Mark was at a loss of what to do. He was no good with maps, so he was no help to Rene on that part, or any navigator, and they had enough pirates to man the sails and keep the oarslaves in line. Ah, sometime life on the sea can be mighty rough for a pirate, but it's even worse when it's perfectly calm, he mused, smiling in spite of himself.
